My love for designing invitations and stationery today began seven years ago sitting in a cubicle at my first job out of college. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a Business Communications degree, I started my first job out East for an event management company. Working alongside a graphic designer in the development of marketing collateral for all of our events, I quickly developed a fascination for graphic design. Little by little, when the opportunities presented themselves, I began teaching myself all of the basic elements of design and learning the necessary design programs.
It wasn’t until 2003, planning for my own wedding, that I started experimenting with invitation design. I was frustrated with the lack of options available to me as a bride with a small budget in search of a classic, modern and unique invitation. I chose to design my own wedding invitation and in doing so realized the true joy in working with the endless array of papers, fonts, ink colors, etc. within my reach. The design possibilities were endless.
After tying the knot, I started getting requests from family and friends to design for them. Weddings, baby showers, bachelorette parties, birthdays, etc….I was so grateful for the opportunity to share in these important moments of their lives. It was from these experiences that Mimi Design was born!
The name Mimi Design is a tribute to my late mother Mary, better known as “Mimi” in my family.
